Cape Senior Babe Ruthsweeps aside Chaffee
The Cape Senior Babe Ruth baseball team received a pair of one-hit performances Monday in a doubleheader road sweep of Chaffee.
Cape won the opener 10-2, then marched to a 16-1 victory in five innings.
Nick Ostendorf allowed one hit in the first game, striking out five and walking four in six innings.
Chad Friend led a 10-hit attack with three hits, which included two doubles. Abe Dirnberger added a pair of hits.
Tyler Brandt gave up just one hit in four innings of the second game, striking out five and walking four.
Cape had 15 hits, led by three hits apiece by Dustin LeGrand and Jacob Valleroy.
Southeast baseballsigns two players
The Southeast Missouri State baseball team announced the signing of two junior college transfers, infielder Tony Spencer of Mineral Area College (Park Hills, Mo.) and outfielder Justin Wheeler of Golden West College (Huntington Beach, Calif.), on Tuesday.
Spencer, a 2005 Vianney graduate, batted .374 with 20 RBIs and played second base during his sophomore season at Mineral Area College.
Wheeler batted .381 as a sophomore with a team-high eight home runs. He also had 17 doubles and 41 RBIs.
Werner wins GatewayPGA Junior Series event
Tanner Werner shot a tournament-low 6-over-par 78 Tuesday to win the Boys 14-15 Tour division at the Gateway PGA Junior Series event at Dalhousie Golf Club.
Werner won by five strokes over Eric Hayes (83). Gene Williams won the Boys 16-19 Tour division with an 81.

Two players to playin all-star game
Delta's Kaci Menz and Advance's Shea Smith have been selected to play in the 14th annual Gerald A. Pilz and Friends basketball all-star games on July 7 at College of the Ozarks. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
Four local Maryvilleathletes earn honors
Four Maryville University athletes with ties to the area were named to the 2006-07 Saints Academic team. To be eligible for the team, athletes needed to achieve at least a 3.5 grade-point average for the academic year and complete a season as a member of a varsity team.
Local members on the team were: Notre Dame alumnus Lee Essner, a baseball player; Jackson's Katie Biri, a soccer player; Perryville's Amber Hacker, a soccer player; and Notre Dame alumna Megan Holloway, a soccer player.
