In three days fireworks will rain over much of Southeast Missouri in celebration of our nation's Independence Day. Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Perryville, Oran, Ste. Genevieve and Sikeston all plan big displays.

In downtown Cape Girardeau, Libertyfest will offer music, historic tours and entertainment for children. Just before the fireworks, Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson will present the Southeast Missourian's annual Spirit of America Award. The nominees and the recipient of the award will be announced in Tuesday's Southeast Missourian. Past winners are John "Doc" Yallaly, Dr. Dan Cotner, Melvin Gateley and Neal Edwards.

Jackson's celebration will begin early with a 7:30 a.m. race, followed by a full day of activities at Jackson City Park.
