Eagles, hawks among birds at rec center

Eagle Day will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the West Gym of the Student Recreation Center at Southeast Missouri State University. The World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis will include live entertainment and a fly-over of the audience by birds. An eagle, three owls, two hawks, a vulture and a kestrel will be part of the show, which is open to the public.

Emerson's mobile office schedules area stops

U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's mobile office will visit Southeast Missouri for consitutuents to air their concerns. Mobile office director Darren Lingle will be able to answer the public's questions and write down concerns from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sikeston Heritage House and 12 to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Charleston Library. The office will appear Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Advance City Hall, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Oran City Hall and from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Chaffee City Hall.

Community Caring Council meets at church

The next Community Caring Council meeting will be at 7:30 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Series addresses cultural parenting perspectives

Registration closes Friday for the two-part national satellite series on cultural perspectives on parenting offered from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 23 and Nov. 13 at the Cape Girardeau County Extension Office, 684 W. Jackson Trail, Jackson. The program is free, but registration is encouraged to allow for adequate handout materials.

According to Mary Gosche, human development specialist, University of Missouri Outreach and Extension, "The satellite series will give local participants the opportunity to see and hear prominent national researchers and practitioners who specialize in family-centered practices and parenting in diverse cultures."

Viewers will have the opportunity to ask questions via live call-in sessions.

Parents group to attend line dance lessons

Parents Without Partners will attend line dance lessons from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Circle S. Saddle in Gordonville. There is a cost.

Florsheim picnic scheduled for Saturday

The Florsheim picnic will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cape County Park North, shelter 4. Potluck meal is at 5 p.m. Bring a dish, drinks and lawn chairs. Plates, napkins and silverware will be provided. Fishing will be available; no license is required for children under 16 or adults over 60.

Earth science exhibits on display this week

To celebrate Earth Science Week this week, the Department of Geosciences at Southeast Missouri State University and the NASA Educator Resource Center, 222 N. Pacific, will have displays and exhibits on the first floor of Rhodes Hall. Call 290-5255 for more information.

The public is invited to visit these displays, which include maps of the Lewis and Clark expedition, the New Madrid Seismic Zone, Missouri geology, U.S. geology and the 1993 Mississippi River flood.

Specimens of minerals, rocks and fossils will be identified for the public by Nicholas Tibbs, professor of geosciences, from noon to 2 p.m. today, Tuesday and Wednesday. No appointment is necessary. Call 651-2168 for more information.

At noon and 2 p.m. Tuesday, Gary Lowell and Gary Cwick will demonstrate remote sensing techniques; at noon Wednesday, Michael Aide and John Holbrook will demonstrate how soil investigations are conducted.
