Singer-songwriters at Grace Cafe

Singer-songwriter Joe Pagetta will perform at 8 tonight at Grace Cafe in Cape Girardeau. Also performing will be the local band Juniper Wind.

As a soloist Pagetta performed at New York City's singer-songwriter clubs, drawing critical comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Dylan. Since moving to Nashville in 1998, he has performed at such venues as the Radio Cafe, Gibson's Guitar Cafe & Gallery and Exit/In.

He has released a CD titled "Recollections of Maybeville" and another called "Small Worlds."

No admission will be charged, but tips are welcome.

Performing Saturday night at Grace Cafe will be Southern Illinois singer-songwriter Randy Auxier and fiddler Ryan Hesketh. Auxier will celebrate the release of his new CD, "Southwind."

Artist 'in residence' at galleries today

Louise Bodenheimer will be "in residence" at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri galleries today.

Bodenheimer's exhibit "Guardians, Mothers and Birth of a Woman" is on display at the galleries this month. She will be on hand to talk about her artwork and to meet visitors from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. today.

Choral concerts tonight, Tuesday

The 16-voice chamber choir from Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo., will present a concert at 7 tonight at Grace Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. The Central High School Chamber Choir will open the concert.

The Fall Choral Festival will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Central Junior High School Auditorium. Choirs from New Madrid, Poplar Bluff, Jackson, Fredericktown and Cape Central will participate.

Vulture Fest 2003 this weekend

MAKANDA, Ill. -- Vulture Fest 2003 will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in downtown Makanda.

The festival is named for the approximately 300 vultures that reside in the village each winter. Artists will offer pottery, paintings, photos, jewelry, blown glass, candles, painted silk and more.

Twenty musical acts will perform. In addition, there will be Native American dancing, flute playing, African drumming, many different kinds of food and a minicarnival.

'Same Time Next Year' to open Oct. 24

The River City Players will present Neil Simon's play "Same Time Next Year" Oct. 24-25, 30-31 and Nov. 1 at Port Cape's River City Yacht Club.

The two-person comedy will star Stacey Storey and Jeff Statler.

A show-only performance for $7 will be presented Oct. 30. All other performances are dinner theaters at $19.95.

'Proof' at Market House Theatre in Paducah

PADUCAH, Ky. -- The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "Proof" is now playing at the Market House Theatre.

Based on the life of mathematician John Nash (portrayed in the film "A Beautiful Mind"), the play tells the story of the daughter who is haunted by her father and his illness.

"Proof" contains adult language and situations and is not recommended for children.

Shows today through Sunday and Oct. 23-26 and Oct. 30-Nov. 1. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. except the 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinees.

Tickets for Thursday and Sunday performances are $11 seniors and $13 general. Tickets for Friday and Saturday shows are $25. Student rush tickets are $7 and available at the show time only on Thursdays and Sundays.

Chairs for Charity to be displayed

The final Bring Your Own Chair Sunday Showcase at the Jackson City Park Band Shell will be an occasion to view entries in the Chairs for Charity fund raising project.

The showcase will begin at 4 p.m.

The free hour-long performance will feature fifth-grade music students from Immaculate Conception School, the adult and children's worship dances from Christ Church of the Heartland and local singer-songwriter Julie Walker.

Children will be invited to join in a game of musical chairs using the Chairs for Charity entries.

Among the whimsically decorated chairs will be "Chair-ub," "AgriculChair" and "Sonny and Chair." These and other entries will be auctioned off on Nov. 16 to raise funds for cultural programming in the Jackson area.

Wind ensemble performance Thursday

The Southeast Missouri State University's Symphonic Wind Ensemble will open its concert season Thursday with music by Bach, Sousa and Norwegian greats Edvard Grieg and Egil Hovland.

The evening also will offer the American premiere was a work by award-winning Austrian composer Thomas Doss.

The wind ensemble is the university's premier wind and percussion group. Dr. Robert Gifford is the director.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at Academic Auditorium.

Arts council membership party Oct. 24

"The Bard & the Bounty," the annual membership party of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, will be held Oct. 24 at the council's galleries, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau.

Those at the catered dinner also will attend the opening night performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Rose Theatre.

The arts council's annual Dingeldein Award for Excellence in the Arts will be presented during the play's intermission.

Tickets are $50. The party is open to all arts council members.

"Songs for Low Women" set for Oct. 26

Contralto Dr. Leslie Jones will present "Songs for Low Women," music appropriate for the low voice, in a recital Oct. 26.

Jones' concert is the third performance in the 2003-2004 Faculty Showcase Series presented by the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music.

Accompanied by Matt Yount on piano, Dr. Gary Miller on piano and Dr. Sara Edgerton on cello, Jones will perform Vivaldi's Cantata RV 674, "Perfidissimo cor! Iniquo fato!;" Brahms' "Ziegeunerlieder," Op. 103; Debussy's "Chansons de Bilitis;" and Britten's "Charm of Lullabies," Op. 41.

The concert will begin at 3 p.m. at Old St. Vincent's Church. Advance tickets are $7 for the public, $6 for Southeast faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $5 for students. All tickets are $7 at the door.

Stem cell symposium scheduled for Oct. 29

ST. LOUIS -- A symposium on stem cell research will be held Oct. 29 at the St. Louis Science Center, 5050 Oakland Ave.

Speakers include professors from the Washington University schools of medicine and law.

Admission is free and open to the public. The symposium will be from 2 to 5:30 p.m.

Maxwell Street Klezmer Band Chicago at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band Chicago will perform Oct. 30 at SIU's Shryock Auditorium.

The band plays traditional Jewish music from the 1930s to the 1950s, combining dance music, folk songs, theater medleys and jazzy Yiddish pop music. Their latest recording is titled "Old Roots, New World" and contains songs from the jazz era with a Gershwin sound.

The band was featured in the PBS "Do It Yourself Hanukkah" special in 2000.

Tickets are $23 for the general public and $17 for children 15 and younger and senior citizens 55 and older.

Festival of Lights begins Nov. 1 in Branson

BRANSON, Mo. -- The 2003 Branson Area Festival of Lights begins Nov. 1 and continues through Dec. 31.

Vignettes from the "12 Days of Christmas" will accompany 500,000 lights lining a two-mile stretch of Branson Hills Parkway. The presentation includes a nativity scene, a Santa, reindeer jumping over the parkway and animated displays along with a glowing Christmas tree.

The cost of driving through the Festival of Lights Parkway is $7 per family vehicle and $50 per coach.

Jazz vocalist in St. Louis Nov. 12-15

ST. LOUIS -- Critically acclaimed vocalist Steve Tyrell will perform Nov. 12-15 at Jazz at the Bistro.

Tyrell ranks behind only Tony Bennett and Harry Connick Jr. in CD sales by a traditional jazz male vocalist. His second album, "Standard Time," spent nearly 80 weeks on Billboard's Top 10 jazz chart.
