Ground-breaking ceremony yesterday at 701 Good Hope marked start of construction of $1 million Salvation Army headquarters; new, 17,200-square-foot building has been Capt. Elmer Trapp's dream for several years; new structure will mark first time Salvation Army in Cape Girardeau will have adequate facilities.

Even though his party affiliation is different from Gov. Mel Carnahan, Cape Girardeau County Associate Circuit Judge Benjamin F. Lewis has asked governor to appoint him to fill vacancy as circuit judge in 32nd Judicial Circuit; one day after Circuit Judge A.J. Seier announced he would retire, Lewis, a Republican, sent Democrat Carnahan letter expressing his interest in position.

25 years ago: Oct. 21, 1978

Sikeston, Mo. -- Retiring Missouri Supreme Court Judge James A. Finch Jr. of Cape Girardeau is one of two high court judges and commissioner of Supreme Court honored in evening; Finch, Judge Fred L. Henley of Caruthersville, Mo., and Commissioner Norwin D. Houser of Flat River, Mo., and their wives are honored at event sponsored by Scott County Bar Association at Sikeston Country Club.

James Bequette was appointed deputy assessor for Cape Girardeau office, upon recommendation of Assessor Jerry Reynolds, during recent county court session.

50 years ago: Oct. 21, 1953

Cape Girardeau man was among three leaders in boy scouting in Southeast Missouri Council to be presented Scouting's distinguished service medal, Silver Beaver award, last night at annual meeting of council; awards went to H.A. Suedekum, committeeman of Trinity Lutheran Church's Troop 8; Mayor Clarence Hinni of Perryville, where he is scoutmaster of Troop 56, and Harold Hamby, scoutmaster of Troop 93 at Caruthersville.

Freight rates will be reduced 50 percent for hay being shipped into drought-stricken areas, says B.E. Montgomery, Frisco Railroad agent; rate schedules approved by all railroads and received by Montgomery this morning apply to hay shipments into Cape Girardeau from practically all western, mid-western and northern points.

75 years ago: Oct. 21, 1928

Juden Music Co. formally opened yesterday at 705 Broadway in building formerly occupied by Barenkamp Shoe Store; Claude Juden and Peg Meyer, latter proprietor of Peg Meyer Music Co., which has been located in New Broadway Theater building on Broadway, are partners in business; Juden will have charge of sales department for radios and phonographs, while Meyer will conduct studio in connection with it.

Second sunrise Sunday breakfast is served to employees of Cape Girardeau Bell Telephone Co. at old fairgrounds west of city; first was given last Sunday, the work force being divided and two breakfasts being given as all employees couldn't be away from office at same time.
