Since I had such an overwhelming response to my letter last month about the Humane Society, I would like to report that, thanks to the Southeast Missourian's "free for the taking" ads, I have adopted a Great Pyrenees-German shepherd mix. Both breeds are known for their trait of staying with a flock and guarding it against predators.

I recognize there are dogs brought to the animal shelter that cannot be adopted because they are vicious or for other reasons. The Humane Society performs a service by euthanizing those animals. Where the Humane Society has failed is in not allowing other animals to be adopted.

I feel sure from talking to the people who contacted me that there are many good and caring people who would give dogs a good home but have been turned down because of the rules. Those rules are designed to get rid of as many dogs and cats as possible but not to find homes for them.
