Woman reports man attacked her Sunday

A Cape Girardeau woman reported that her boyfriend attacked her Sunday after the two had been drinking, Cape Girardeau police spokesman Cpl. Jason Selzer said. Devin L. Baugher, 41, East Cape Trailer Park Lot 58 in Cape Girardeau, was charged by Cape Girardeau County prosecutors with felony domestic assault as a result of the complaint. Baugher is being held on a $7,500 cash-only bond at the Cape Girardeau County Jail. If he posts bond, he must have no contact with the woman and stay 1,000 feet away from her home and work. The woman gave differing accounts of the incident, Selzer said. She told officers at one point she was asleep when the attack began, then changed the story to they were watching movie, he said. She told officers she let him into the house, then said he must have broken in, Selzer said. She told officers she had been beaten in the face and that Baugher held a knife to her throat. No knife was recovered, Selzer said. The woman had no visible injuries, officers at the scene reported, and she refused medical treatment.

Cape man faces felony domestic assault charges

A Cape Girardeau man faces felony domestic assault charges following a Saturday evening attack. Lewellyn Hughes, 49, of 1507 Jessica Drive, is accused of dragging a woman across the floor by her hair after striking her with his fists, Cape Girardeau police spokesman Cpl. Jason Selzer said Tuesday. The woman's request for car keys apparently sparked the beating, Selzer said. According to Selzer, the woman told police that as she followed him downstairs into the basement of the home, he called her an obscene name. Selzer said she also told investigating officers that "he balled up his fists and ran over to me and punched me in the temple of my head," Selzer said. Officers investigating the complaint reported that the woman had a swollen area on the left side of her forehead. She also had rug burn injuries on her elbows consistent with being dragged across the floor, Selzer said. Hughes is being held at the Cape Girardeau County Jail on a $7,500 cash-only bond. If released on bond, he must have no contact with the woman and stay more than 1,000 feet away from her work or residence.
