50 years ago: Aug. 1, 1957

In the final and most exciting game of the Babe Ruth state tournament first round, Sikeston nosed out Lebanon, 1-0, in a pitching duel that went extra innings last night at Capaha Park; in the afternoon session, two no-hit games highlighted one-sided contests, as defending champion Joplin routed Buffalo, 24-1, and Poplar Bluff North downed Ava, 19-1; the other scheduled game was called off when Lamar failed to show up to meet Poplar Bluff South.

Col. Joseph P. Russell of Cape Girar-deau is made commanding officer of the Army hospital and post surgeon at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

75 years ago: Aug. 1, 1932

With orders enough to last a year, 10 more employees have been added at the new Ely-Walker coat mill in Fornfelt, Mo.; that makes a total of 50 employees at the factory.

Cape Girardeau County voters, with others in Missouri, will go to the polls tomorrow to nominate candidates of each of the parties for national, state and county posts; a record number of candidates, along with the local Democratic drive on behalf of Sen. R.L. Dearmont's nomination for governor, are expected to bring out a large vote.

100 years ago: Aug. 1, 1907

The Juden Mercantile Co. has been awarded the contract to furnish all the hardware to be used in the Himmelberger-Harrison Building.

Samuel Gould, who operates three of the leading stores in Cairo, Ill., is in Cape Girardeau to establish a branch store here; he has leased the room just north of Bahn Bros.' Hardware Store on Main Street; he expects to put in a large line of ready-to-wear apparel shortly; the store will be known as the Southern Mercantile Co.
