Almost three years after its original rate increase request, Cape Girardeau Cable Television's basic monthly cable subscription fee will go up 21.6 percent this week; the fee will go from $5.88 per monthly to $7.50; the city council authorized the September rate increase last summer.

Cape Girardeau County assistant jail administrator Richard H. Presnell has resigned to take a position with the Perry County Sheriff's Department.

50 years ago: Aug. 30, 1957

Test borings are being made by the Hirsch Broadcasting Co. to determine the depth of rock for a foundation as a preliminary to construction of a projected nine-story office building at 324 Broadway.

Bernice Milenoff is among the newcomers to Cape Girardeau, recently moving here from Coral Gables, Fla.; she is making her home with Mrs. O.W. Burk, 775 Perry Ave., where she and Jo Anne Stevenson will operate a piano and ballet studio.

75 years ago: Aug. 30, 1932

Cape Girardeau residents are warned to protect their eyes tomorrow if they gaze upon the eclipse of the sun; the best time to see the phenomenon locally will be after 2 p.m., when seven-tenths of the sun will be covered at the fullest point of the eclipse.

Excavation for the basement of a five-room dwelling at 520 S. Park Ave. for W.H. Statler is begun; the building will be constructed of brick and will be of English-type architecture; Louis Schott and George Roth are the contractors.

100 years ago: Aug. 30, 1907

Because of the subdivision of the Cape Girardeau school district this year, made necessary by the opening of the new West Broadway School, many children will find new school homes this year; there are three subdivisions, with a school in each: Lorimier, Jefferson and West Broadway.

That new grocery company, composed of Ollie Bowman, Richard Huebel and Fred Hunze, is now in possession of the grocery store operated for many years by the Kempe brothers at the corner of Broadway and Fountain Street; the company will move from its stand on Frederick Street, where it opened recently, to the more established Broadway location.
