CHAFFEE -- Chaffee ended its 34-game losing streak against Grandview last season.

The Red Devils looked like a juggernaut in this year's rematch.

Chaffee scored five different ways as it routed the Eagles 47-6 in the season opener for both teams Friday in Chaffee.

"We wanted to score every drive, that was our thing," Chaffee senior Jerrod Steger said. "They said it was a fluke last time we beat them. We wanted to beat them 100-0 really."

The Red Devils jumped out to a 34-0 lead after one quarter and pushed their lead to 47-0 at halftime. But it wasn't just Chaffee's offense that found the end zone. Its defense accounted for 14 points to add to the blowout.

Michael Spies returned an interception 56 yards and Hunter Thomason returned one 62 yards for the Red Devils.

"After I caught it and the line blocked for me, I got down here," Spies said. "It all just came real."

Spies, a senior, said it was his first touchdown. He said it wasn't difficult to read where Grandview quarterback Gary Britton planned to go with the ball.

"Whenever he turned and looked back in my direction, I just went back that way," Spies said. "He just released the ball and I went up and got it."

Jo Jo Myers and Adam Horton added a sack apiece for safeties to round out the defense's scoring.

"We're just playing, working our butts off," Spies said of the defense's contributions.

Grandview managed 34 yards on offense in the first half. It gained 52 yards through the air, but lost 18 yards on the ground in the half.

Chaffee's offense also looked sharp in the rout. Dylan McAlister scored two rushing touchdowns and Jerrod Steger added a rushing touchdown and one scoring catch.

"They didn't have a jamboree," McAlister said. "We didn't have film on them. We just didn't know really what to expect."

Andy Hendrix, who moved from running back to quarterback this season, enjoyed a successful debut in the pocket. He completed both his passes, including a 31-yarder to Steger that went for a touchdown. He gave way to Steger at quarterback midway through the second quarter and Aaron Horrell took the snaps in the second half.

Collin Dannenmueller returned a free kick following a safety for a touchdown in the first quarter. Dannenmueller's return capped the five ways Chaffee scored Friday -- pass, run, interception return, safety and kick return.

"I think we looked pretty good," Steger said. "I think we'll be pretty good later on in the season. I think we'll toughen up."
