A plaque which designates that Old St. Vincent's Church officially has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places is presented to Bishop Bernard F. Law of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese during the morning Mass at the historic structure on Main Street.

The Kroger Sav-On store in Cape Girardeau is for sale, but according to the director of operations in St. Louis, there is nothing imminent with regard to a possible transaction.

50 years ago: Sept. 19, 1957

Pending installation of panic hardware on all outside doors of Albert and Leming halls, women's dormitories on the campus, was endorsed by the State College Board of Regents yesterday; since the dorms were built early in the century, there has been no method of exit at night; all doors are locked at a specified time and can be opened only by a key.

The Cape Girardeau City Council views with alarm the plan for a dead end to Hopper Road at the new interstate highway intersection and agrees to put its weight behind any community move to protest the State Highway Department's proposal.

75 years ago: Sept. 19, 1932

Because of the heavy early movement of cotton, the Frisco Railroad in the territory from Cape Girardeau south has added 10 freight cars during the past week; extra men have been hired to handle the additional cars.

R.B. Potashnick, a Cape Girardeau contractor who was recently awarded a $200,000 contract for constructing dikes in the Mississippi River near the mouth of the Missouri River, has purchased the steam towboat Ebaugh; the boat, along with five barges Potashnick also purchased, will be used on this and similar projects.

100 years ago: Sept. 19, 1907

The Daily Republican has just closed a contract with the Duplex Printing Press Co., of Battle Creek, Mich., for a newspaper press and folder; the new machinery is to be installed and in operation by Oct. 15.

I.W. Clark and son, Rex, have opened a first-class billiard and pool room in the basement of the Elks Club building; it will be known as the Grand Billiard and Pool Room.
