Humane Society holds poster pet contest

The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri is holding a poster pet contest. The winner's picture will be used for 2008 advertising on flier, posters, newsletters and other advertising. One winner will be chosen and receive a $30 Petco gift card, a $30 gift certificate from Dana's Pet Salon, a personalized photo album and 30 note cards with the star's picture on the cover. To enter, mail the photo to the Humane Society, c/o Pet Poster Contest, 2536 Boutin Drive, Cape Girardeau, Mo., 63701. Pictures should be no larger than 5x7 and no smaller than wallet-size. Include the pet's name, age and breed on the back of the picture and attach the owner's name, address and phone number on a piece of paper. There is a fee per pet. The contest is open to domestic animals only. Contest ends Dec. 1, and winners will be posted at www.semopets.org. For more information, contact director Cheryle Dillon at 334-5837.

SHARE support group remembers babies

A "Walk to Remember" will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cape County Park North. Registration is at 9 a.m. at Pavilion 4. Southeast Missouri Hospital and the SHARE support group invite women and families who have suffered a miscarriage or stillbirth and still grieve for their babies to attend. It will be the third SHARE Walk since its inception in 2002. The support group has existed since the mid-1980s and is part of a national organization. Babies' names will be read, and a balloon and dove release will be part of the ceremony. For more information or to register, call 334-9254.

Crafts to be shown at Saxon Lutheran festival

FROHNA, Mo. -- The Saxon Lutheran Memorial annual festival will bring history to life with displays and demonstrations of traditional arts and crafts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Haunted Hall of Horror to be held at Arena

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department and River Radio will sponsor the 2007 Haunted Hall of Horror from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19, 20, 26 and 27 at the Arena Building. On Oct. 25, 27 and 31, the event will end at 11 p.m. All ages are invited; children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Discounted admission for children 12 and younger. Pay at the door. Casper/Grossheider reunion set for Oct. 28

The annual Caspar and Catherine Grossheider family reunion will be held at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at Zion Lutheran Church parish hall, Highway 25, south of Gordonville. Presentation to be given at Fort Davidson site

A presentation titled "Earth Trail Tales" will be given by Gale Rublee Portman from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Fort Davidson State Historic Site Interpretive Center in Pilot Knob, Mo. This event is sponsored by MO-TELL and the Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks. The site is near the junction of highways 221 (old Route V) and 21 in Pilot Knob. It is the site of a Civil War fort and scene of a battle fought Sept. 26 and 27, 1864, between Confederate forces under Gen. Sterling Price and Union forces under Gen. Thomas Ewing. Marines' birthday ball to be held Nov. 10

The Cpl. Mason O. Yarbrough Detachment of the Marine Corps League will host a birthday ball beginning at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 10, at the Bavarian Halle in Fruitland. The ball celebrates the 232nd birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. It is open to all area Marines and the public. Opening military ceremonies will be at 6:30 p.m., dinner and birthday cake will be at 7 p.m., and entertainment and dancing will be at 8 p.m. Admission fee includes a commemorative birthday ball glass and challenge coin.
