Acrylic nail primer recalled

WASHINGTON -- An Illinois company is recalling 72,000 bottles of SASSI brand acrylic nail primer because the acid-based manicure aid did not come in childproof packaging, as required by law.

A 2-year-old girl in Pompano Beach, Fla., suffered severe external and internal chemical burns after swallowing the primer, which is manufactured by Sassi America of Elk Grove Village, Ill., the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday. The methacryclic acid primer is used to prepare fingernails before attaching artificial nails. The primer is packaged in amber-colored bottles with black caps labeled "SASSI."

The model number 508, 509, 510, 511 or 512 is written on the front of the label. The primer, which was sold separately and in kits, came in 0.25 ounce, 0.50-ounce, 1-ounce, 2-ounce and 4-ounce sizes.

The primer was sold in grocery and beauty supply stores nationwide between June 2000 and January 2004 for between $2 and $10.

Consumers are urged to return the primer and kits to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers can call SASSI America collect at 1-847-228-0334 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. CST Monday through Friday.
