Cardinals teammates Albert Pujols and Mike Matheny were cited Tuesday by the St. Louis chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Pujols, the NL batting champion, was honored as baseball's man of the year. Matheny received the first Darryl Kile award for having an approach to the game that mirrored that of Kile, the Cardinals pitcher who died in 2002.

The Kansas City Royals and Carlos Beltran avoided arbitration when the outfielder signed a one-year, $9 million contract with the club.

The Atlanta Braves agreed to a $4.2 million, one-year deal with newly acquired outfielder J.D. Drew.

College

The Ohio Valley Conference suspended Tennessee Tech women's coach Bill Worrell for one game as punishment for being ejected from his last game. Worrell received two technicals on Saturday in a game against Eastern Kentucky, which resulted in his ejection. OVC policy mandates a minimum one-game suspension for anyone ejected from a game. Worrell will sit out Tennessee Tech's game on Thursday against Southeast Missouri.

Brian Brohm, the 2003 Mr. Football, one of the nation's most highly touted high school quarterbacks, announced he will play at Louisville, where his father and two brothers played. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Brohm, ranked the nation's No. 1 prep quarterback by ESPN.com analyst Tom Lemming, picked the Cardinals over Kentucky, Notre Dame and Tennessee.

Football

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning was named NFL player of the year by Sporting News. The publication also named New England's Bill Belichick coach of the year.

Tennis

Defending champion Andre Agassi advanced to the third round of the Australian Open with a 6-0, 6-2, 6-4 win over 18-year-old Tomas Berdych. Agassi, 33, an eight-time Grand Slam winner, closed with an ace in 1 hour, 22 minutes and hasn't dropped a set in the tournament. He converted six of eight break point chances and didn't concede one. Agassi will face the winner of the Thomas Enqvist-Karol Beck match in the third round.
