Residents and businesses along the rapidly rising Mississippi River continue to evacuate as the National Weather Service issues a revised river forecast, which, although lower than had been predicted, still puts the river at a near-record level at Cape Girardeau by Friday; between 400 and 500 people in Cape Girardeau County alone have been left homeless.

LUTESVILLE, Mo. -- There are no classes for students in the Woodland Schools; superintendent Richard Trout says it's impossible to tell when classes will resume in the wake of flooding that ravaged three of the district's four buildings.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Southeast Missouri Boy Scout Council last night recognized three men at the Council Annual Recognition Dinner; the Silver Beaver Award was presented to Bob Eckelmann of Cape Girardeau, W.C. McHaney of Kennett, Mo., and Thurston S. Hill of Dexter, Mo.

Voters of the R-6 School District will ballot next Tuesday on a bond issue that would fund the construction of a new school at Oak Ridge; the school would be of brick construction.

75 years ago: Dec. 6, 1932

Thought to have been stolen four months ago, a steer was found Monday near Blomeyer, Mo., in the middle of a large stack of wheat straw; the animal was skinny and weak when taken from the large hole he had eaten in his confined quarters; H.L. Prosser is owner of the steer.

Foundation work has been completed and framework has been started on the new livestock sales pavilion being erected by Louis C. Blattner at the northwest corner of Bloomfield Road and Highway 61.

100 years ago: Dec. 6, 1907

L.F. Lawler, the Independence Street butcher, receives six beautiful steers from Tom McClure of Illinois; they weigh 6,340 pounds and bring $4.50 a hundred.

Ora Stiff, a young lady who has been visiting Mrs. J.F. Norman of Main Street for several weeks, left yesterday for her home at Harrisburg, Ill.; she was the object of much attention while here because of her remarkable beauty and her grace on roller skates.
