Southeast Missouri State sophomore Karleigh DeLong recently was named an All-Midwest Region honorable mention selection by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

DeLong is the first Southeast volleyball player to earn all-region recognition in five years, following Emily Scannell, who was also honorable mention in 2002.

DeLong, an outside hitter, led the Redhawks in kills and service aces, while ranking second in digs and blocks on her way to earning first team all-Ohio Valley Conference honors.

DeLong produced 20 double-doubles on the year, including a career-best 28-kill, 25-dig performance at Tennessee Tech on Sept. 15.

Southeast gymnastics have been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri for the past four years.

Each gymnast is matched up with a child from the community that has similar interests and personality. The gymnasts engage in an activity with the children each month.

"The credit for this award goes to my students and [assistant] coach Brogan [Evanson]," Southeast coach Tom Farden said in a release. "I know that they provide a unique opportunity for these children that is making a difference in their lives today and beyond.

"I am proud of our gymnastics program and we are honored to receive such a distinguished award."

The Redhawks have been invited to receive their award at a ceremony in St. Louis on Dec. 19.
