Arthritis and chronic joint symptoms affect 46 million Americans, or one out of three adults and about 300,000 children, according to the Eastern Missouri Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.

In order to help combat arthritis and related conditions, the Arthritis Foundation is holding its annual Jingle Bell run/walk at locations across the country, and those in Southeast Missouri are invited to take part Saturday.

The annual event is intended to increase arthritis awareness while raising money for research, health education and government advocacy.

The Jingle Bell Run includes a 5 kilometer run, a one-mile walk and a Tot Trot starting and finishing at Fitness Plus, 150 S. Mount Auburn Road, in Cape Girardeau.

Participants are eligible for a preregistration discount until 8 p.m. Friday at Fitness Plus, or they may register on race day at 7 a.m.; the race starts at 8 a.m. Saturday. All 5K and one-mile participants will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt, gloves and jingles for their shoelaces.

The event will be co-hosted by the Cape Girardeau Road Runners. Participants tie jingle bells to their shoelaces and don holiday costumes for the race.
