Violent crimes

FATAL ASSAULTS upon our law-enforcement officers have risen to an all-time high this year of 170. A lot of the officers who were gunned down on our streets across our nation were committed with assault weapons. Violent crime is also at an all-time high in this country. It is time to take our streets back and place a ban on all assault weapons. We need a lot more focus on problems right here in our country instead of everything being focused on the mess our leaders got us into overseas.

Religious teaching

IN RESPONSE to the caller who thinks the superintendent should send his or her children to public schools: Maybe these administrators send their children to private because of the religious teaching they offer. Sometimes that is more important to families than supporting a school district just because they work there.

We'll foot the bill

EVERYONE SEEMS to feel sorry for home-loan borrowers who are facing foreclosure because of higher interest rates. Did they not read the contract? It was clear that the low rate was temporary. They can claim they were lured into these deals, but shouldn't they take responsibility for their ignorance? Don't be misled. Any solution by the government to help these borrowers will ultimately be paid for by the rest of us.

Environmental lapse

I HEARD on the news that the recent fires in California have stripped the land. Mudslides may become a major problem. Where are the environmentalists? Why aren't they planting trees and shrubs to hold the topsoil in place? They were largely responsible for the devastation. Their insistence that the brush should not be cleared and their use of the courts to prevent the clearing allowed the brush to choke the hills and canyons. Dead wood provided fuel for the massive fires. The environmentalists will wring their hands and cry while those evil, anti-environment corporations provide the necessary funds and, in many cases, the manpower to replant the area.

East Cape speed limits

I'D LIKE to clarify something for those who drive from Cape Girardeau through East Cape Girardeau. The speed limit on the bridge and through East Cape Girardeau is 45 mph, not 55 to 70-plus. Once you get to the two-lane road on Highway 146 past East Cape, the speed limit is 55, not 45.

Ban smoking

I THINK it is time that we follow Paducah and Illinois and ban smoking in public places. I would certainly like to see the mayor start it in Cape Girardeau.
