A four-alarm fire in the basement of a house on the corner of Bloomfield Street and South Plaza Way put a family on the street, but all safe and accounted for shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday.

The fire started in the basement, but flames were visible from the ground level of the home, said Fred Vincel, a battalion chief with the Cape Gir-ardeau Fire Department.

Upon arrival, firefighters were told children were still in the basement, but residents got them out quickly.

All stations from Cape Gir-ardeau responded to the call. Scott City and Jackson fire departments were called to the outer stations of the city to provide service while the Cape Girardeau crews were at the Bloomfield house fire, Vincel said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. Vincel said multiple families lived in the approximately 2,400-square-foot home. The fire damaged the basement, first floor and smoke was throughout the house.

The flames were out and firefighters were cleaning up and clearing smoke by 6:45 p.m. One truck remained on the scene until after 9 p.m.
