ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A National Guardsman who died after trying to assist another driver during a severe ice storm is being honored by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

A ceremony is being held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis at 10 a.m. There, the Patrol will designate Neilson Rudd an honorary trooper, for his efforts before he was killed.

Rudd stopped at a traffic crash on U.S. 63 near Jefferson City in icy weather on Dec. 9 to help another driver. Rudd tried to make the scene as safe as he could, but was hit by another vehicle that lost control. Rudd later died from his injuries.
