Two men were injured in separate shooting incidents early Saturday morning in Cape Girardeau.

In the first incident, police were responding to a call about shots fired in the vicinity of Broadway and North Ellis Street at about 1 a.m. when they received a report that a wounded man was being treated at Southeast Missouri Hospital, said Cpl. Joyce Statler of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

The 20-year-old victim said he was struck by a bullet in the left hand while near Broadway and North Ellis Street after he heard two gunshots, Statler said. The victim gave no description of the shooter.

At 2:49 a.m., officers were again called to Southeast Missouri Hospital to respond because of a wounded man. The victim, a 22-year-old man, told officers he was walking near the intersection of Maple and South Ellis streets when he was approached by a man who asked for some change, Statler said.

When the victim refused the request, the assailant pulled a gun, Statler said. The victim told officers he grabbed for the gun and it fired, striking him in the left hand.

The second victim was also unable to give a detailed description of his assailant, Statler said.
