Linn State College recognizes local students

The following local students were recognized for high grade point averages for the fall 2003 semester at Linn State Technical College. Dean's list (3.5 GPA or higher) -- Lance Trankler of Jackson, Steven Ford of Oak Ridge, Mo., Michael Meyer and Jeremy Thieret of Perryville, Mo. Honor roll (3.0 to 3.4 GPA) -- James Griffith of Cape Girardeau, Billy Joe Thompson III of Jackson, Benjamin Ponder and Dustin Schoen of Oak Ridge.

Hillsdale College puts Jordan on dean's list

Stephanie Jordan of Cape Girardeau was named to the dean's list at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., for the fall 2003 semester. Jordan, a junior history major, is the daughter of David and Joanne Jordan of Cape Girardeau. She is a graduate of Central High School and the Missouri Academy of Science and Math at Northwest Missouri State University.

Missouri-Rolla adds area learners to honor list

ROLLA, Mo.-- The University of Missouri-Rolla named the following Cape Girardeau students to the fall 2003 semester honor list. Those on the list carried a minimum of 12 hours and had grade point averages of 3.2 or above out of a possible 4.0: Andrew Buchheit, Katherine Clark, Ghaffar Glenn, James Haskell, John Hoffstetter, Daniel Robert, Timothy Robert, Derek Rose, Alexander Spradling, Ryan Stott, Benjamin Swoboda, Andrew Welter and Eric Wessel.

St Vincent celebrates Catholic Schools Week

St. Vincent de Paul School celebrated Catholic Schools Week Jan. 25 through 31 with a "trash to treasures" raffle through which money was collected for a local charity. The school also held a family fun night with games, music and food. Fourth- through eighth-grade students attended a special mass at Notre Dame Regional High School. Catholic Schools Week was established by the National Catholic Educational Association and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to spotlight catholic education.

Bradley Main named to Westminster dean's list

Bradley Main has been named to the dean's list for the fall 2003 semester at Westminster College. Main, the son of Jim and Marge Main of Cape Girardeau, achieved a 4.0 GPA during the semester.

Elks tap Brunner for student of the month

Joe Brunner has been named the Cape Girardeau Elks' student of the month for January. Brunner is the 17-year-old son of Steve Brunner of Kelso, Mo., and Angela Buchheit of Chaffee, Mo. He is a senior at Scott City High School, where he has been involved in football, track and weightlifting. After graduating, he plans to join the U.S. Navy.

High GPA puts Essner on Loyola dean's list

Bonnie Essner has been named to the dean's list for the fall 2003 semester at Loyola University Chicago College of Arts and Sciences. Essner is a member of the National Society for Collegiate Scholars and Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology. She is a 2000 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and is the daughter of Robert P. and Karla Essner of Kelso, Mo.

Berg receives master's from SIU-Edwardsville

Philip Berg, the son of Donald Berg of Cape Girardeau, recently received his master's degree from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Ill. He majored in organizational industrial psychology. In 2000, Berg received his bachelor's degree from St. Louis University. He is employed as a case manager for MERS/Goodwill in St. Louis.

Cape Christian students garner character award

The following students at Cape Christian School were recently honored with the Christian Character Award: In December, first-grader T.J. Pearson, son of Terry and Antoinette Pearson of Cape Girardeau and fifth-grader Victoria Parry, daughter of Grace and Mike Parry of Cape. In January, second-grader Hannah Shaw, daughter of Clifford and Angela Shaw of Cape Girardeau, and fifth-grader Hillary Caldwell daughter of Mary and John Caldwell of Cape.
