Cape Girardeau police reported Tuesday that a man hit by a van near the intersection of West End Boulevard and Bessie Street late that morning wandered out into the street in front of the vehicle. Police weren't releasing the pedestrian's name Tuesday afternoon, but said he was in intensive care at a local hospital in stable condition. The man had been unconscious since being hit by the van at about 11:45 a.m., said police Cpl. Jason Selzer. Selzer said witnesses reported the man had walked in front of the van and that the van appeared to be driving normally and legally. The pedestrian hit the windshield of the 1991 Ford Econoline, driven by David Curtis Smith of Cape Girardeau, before rolling off onto the ground unconscious. No citations are pending for Smith, Selzer said.
