Due to the increase of work in helping people with Medicare and some reduction in grant funding, the APPLE paperwork project will not be able to help with IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) this year. Assistance with property tax claim credits will continue, director Janet Smith said.

AARP-Tax Aide, the nation's largest, free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service, has additional sites set up for assistance.

They will answers to most tax issues faced by middle- and low-income taxpayers with special attention to those age 60 and older.

The schedule is:

  • 8:30 a.m. to noon, Thursdays, Feb. 7, 21, March 6 and April 10, Lone Oak Village office, 109 Tilley St. in Advance, Mo.
  • 1 to 4 p.m., Wednesdays, Feb. 6, 13, March 5 and 12 at Riverside Regional Library, Benton, Mo.
  • 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays, Feb. 5 to April 8, Chaffee Senior Center, 800 S. Main St., Chaffee, Mo.
  • 9 a.m. to noon, Mondays Feb. 4 to April 7 (closed Feb. 18), Marble Hill Nutrition Center, 503 3rd St., Marble Hill, Mo.
  • 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays, Feb. 5 to April 8, Heritage House Senior Center, 305 Cresap St., Sikeston, Mo.

Individuals must bring their return from last year, current year's W-2, 1099 form, Social Security 1099-SA, SSI (letter), 1099-INT form, 1099-DIV form, 1099-R form, paid real estate tax receipt or total of year's rent from landlord with landlord's Social Security number and telephone number. Handicapped/disabled individuals must have current proof of disability.
