When to turn

I AGREE with the "Dangerous biking" comment. The other day I was driving on Route W. The car in front of me was making a left turn. I had to come to a complete stop to accommodate him because of oncoming traffic. I don't mind if people turn left, but I am upset that I have to be inconvenienced in the slightest momentary way to accommodate them. It's a danger, just like people riding bikes. People should do that stuff when I'm not on the road.

Adult responsibility

IN RESPONSE to the"Low TV standards" comment: It's not the media that causes children to behave "so mischievous." The problem is parents and other responsible adults who don't take the time to be a part of children's lives and teach them the differences between right and wrong, fantasy and reality. Nowadays, all the adults want to do is scapegoat and blame things such as television and music for messing up their children.

King's views

SHAME ON columnist Paul Greenberg for trying to co-opt Martin Luther King Jr. for conservatism. True enough, King's views today might be seen in some ways as conservative. But in his day and times conservatives were generally adamant segregationists.

Personal decisions

HOW WONDERFUL. The abortion rate is down in this country. Many attribute it to a cultural sea change based more on personal decisions (see the movie "Juno") and not all the political posturing, ranting and raving.

Inappropriate content

I HAVE to say that I am a little shocked by "Grease" being performed at Central High School. On the surface this is a cute, kid-friendly musical, but the lyrics of some of the songs contain inappropriate material. The entire song "Greased Lightning" is sexual in nature, and teen sex and pregnancy are prevalent themes in this production. Surprisingly, the sex and vulgar language have not been edited for the high school performance. I'm surprised this issue does not raise more concern with parents, teachers and community members.

Knocking the economy

ATTEMPTS BY the liberal news media to convince the world that we are about to go under financially have failed. The stock markets did not crash, and overall economic growth limps along, not at the best rate ever, but onward and upward. The capitalist system continues to work despite the media's best efforts, and the markets will stabilize and recover, just as the have many times in the past.

Need stitches

I SEE the talking heads in Washington are once again proposing a Band-Aid for a deep wound requiring stitches. Come on, people, a $600 tax rebate isn't going to help anyone. If the power-hungry in Washington really wanted to help us out, they would eliminate the federal fuel taxes and scrap our outdated income-tax system and replace it with the Fair Tax. They will not do any of these things, because they would not have power over our lives.

More nuclear power

OTHER industrialized nations around the world are turning more and more to nuclear power to supply their energy needs. It has been quite some time since there was any real attempt to bring more nuclear energy to the grid here in the U.S. The questions we really need to be asking: What is preventing this upgrade to our systems? How do we overcome this problem? I think the answers may surprise most of us.

No name-calling

ANY POLITICIAN or follower of said politician who is into name-calling of others is one who turns me off immediately. If I disagree with you, it is my beliefs or experience that have taught me differently. Name-calling was a childhood experience that I left behind. Shut up or grow up one.

Economic wallowing

IN ITS ongoing attempt to generate news, Big Media will exert all efforts to lead us to talk ourselves into a recession. The resulting bandwagon effect will be an unqualified success, because our lives will, paradoxically, make us feel more meaningful in the sense that we can wallow in our own victimhood as innocent dupes of a recession brought on by international wheelers and dealers.

Matter of choice

HAVE YOU looked at the Web site the state of Missouri has for children who are up for adoption? It is heartbreaking. Women have the right of choice. Would you be able to carry a child and love a child if it came from a rape? Crack babies are born every day and suffer long-term health problems due to the wrong choice to not have an abortion. How many children have you adopted or cared for who have experienced drugs or alcohol in the womb? Don't judge women on their choice.

Support for veterans

I WOULD like to thank all of the individuals and businesses that thoughtfully sent personalized Christmas cards to the veterans at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. My husband was admitted Dec. 12. It was a hard time for me, but just the thought of others having enough compassion helped pick up the Christmas spirit. Than you all so very much.
