Taking a life

I'VE SEEN several comments on the topic of abortion in Speak Out lately. While I admit I have never been in the position to decide whether or not to have a baby, I do believe that women have a choice. With the exception of rape, women have a choice to decide whether or not to have sex. I feel that no one should be engaged in sexual activity unless she is prepared to handle all possible consequences, including contracting an sexually transmitted disease or becoming pregnant. Is this not common sense? Once you are carrying a child, your decisions no longer affect you, and your choices are not yours to make. There is another human being involved. I will never understand why it is acceptable to anyone to murder a child who is still in the womb. Murdering a newborn or discarding of your 8-year-old because you decide you don't want to be a parent are certainly not acceptable actions. So why is killing an unborn child all right?

Too many phones

STUDENTS VERSUS cell phones: Recently I had the pleasure of attending a field trip with Central Junior High School seventh-graders. I have a concern. The students were allowed to use cell phones. I do not agree with this. Most students were on the phone more than observing what they were there for. One boy had two cell phones, one to each ear. It would be OK in case of an emergency for the teachers, parents or chaperones to take one cell phone, but I doubt the students got much of an education. Cell phones are not allowed in class, so why elsewhere?

Showing disrespect

IT'S A shame Martin Luther King's legacy is being reshaped by Democratic liberals who want his blessing. What was his view on abortion, gay marriage and many other Christian values that have been ignored? You never hear the truth when these hypocrites describe Dr. King's true beliefs. He was no way a liberal. What disrespect for this man.

Finish what you start

WHY DID we spend all these millions of dollars building Highway 74 into a nice four-lane road for it to come a dead end? Now officials want to do the same thing with Nash Road. Why not finish what you start before you start something else?

Better stripes

I WISH someone would fix the stripes on Highway 34/72 in Jackson. I drove down the wrong side the other night. Coming in on Highway 72 from Millersville, you get to the divided part. One goes right, and one goes left. It's not lit up at night. I went on the wrong side and nearly got killed. Would somebody please mark it?

Why the bailout?

WHAT A shame. We finally get a good governor and he bails out on us. Why?

More refund

IF THE $600 tax refund is going to help out the economy so much, why not give everybody $10,000? Everything will be wonderful.

Working for checks

Social Security recipients worked for the checks they receive. I worked and paid taxes more than 40 years for the check I get. We had no choice but to pay the taxes. When I retired, I was making less than young people start out on jobs now. So we old-timers might think we should be getting larger increases than we got this year or any year. Less than 3 percent on $700 monthly doesn't add up to much of an increase when Medicare premiums go up every year also and everything we buy at the stores cost us so much. People who get Social Security, workers' compensation or unemployment checks worked, or they wouldn't be getting those checks.
