Speaking at the annual Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce dinner last night, Gov. Christopher S. Bond announced Tri-Con Corp., will hire about 120 workers here to produce automobile seat covers for the Chrysler Corporation; the company has leased space from the Ralph Edwards Sportswear Co.

Dr. Cleo Mabrey, director of student teaching at Southeast Missouri State University, was named recipient of the 21st annual Golden Deeds Award at the Chamber of Commerce dinner last night; the award is made each year by the Evening Exchange Club.

50 years ago: March 2, 1958

The Rev. A. T. Wilkinson, a retired Baptist minister of Cape Girardeau, has been called to serve as interim pastor of the First Baptist Church in Chaffee, Mo., until a new pastor is called.

Ground-breaking ceremonies are held in the afternoon for the new St. Andrew Lutheran Church on Kingsway; among those participating in the event are M. Luther Hahs, president of the congregation; Kenneth Bender, chairman of the building committee; the Rev. Francis Roschke, pastor of St. Andrew, and the Rev. Ralph C. Fessler, pastor of Trinity Church.

75 years ago: March 2, 1933

Prices on garden and truck seeds are lower this year in Cape Girardeau; seed potatoes are being offered from 70 to 90 cents per bushel; onions for planting are retailing at 20 to 25 cents per gallon.

Linus E. Kight of the Great Lakes Naval Station is spending a furlough in Cape Girardeau County, visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Kight of Arbor; he enlisted in the Navy 18 months ago.

100 years ago: March 2, 1908

Charles Mammon, living east of Egypt Mills, sells his farm of 103 acres to Henry Lange, a farmer of the same neighborhood; Mammon hasn't decided what he will do when he leaves the farm.

After spending several hours hearing the case against the city treasurer, the Cape Girardeau City Council adjourns until next Saturday morning; the meeting breaks up around midnight; at the opening of the council meeting, the resignation of George Chappell as city clerk was received and accepted unanimously.
