TAMMS, Ill. -- Donald H. Smith, 70, of Tamms died Thursday, April 15, 2004, at his home.
He was born Dec. 10, 1933, at Rolla, Mo., son of David and Melba Jett Smith. He married Norma Jane Davis, who died July 13, 1992. He later married June "Teen" Boyd Sept. 10, 1994.
Smith studied mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois-Champaign. He served in the U.S. Army, and served 37 years in the Army Reserves. He was a crane operator 39 years at Granite City Steel.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Granite City, and attended Alexander Free Will Baptist Church in Olive Branch. He had been active with Tamms Volunteer Fire Department the past 10 years.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Cheryl Pelate of Glen Carbon, Ill., Patricia Hogan of Indianapolis, Ind., Kimberly Lurtz of Florissant, Mo.; a son, Jeffrey Smith of Granite City; a stepdaughter, Sharon Abercrombie of Tamms; a stepson, Gary Newell of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Patricia "Bobbie" Adams of Austin, Texas; a brother, Jerry Smith of St. Louis; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Friends may call at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Irwin Funeral Home in Granite City, with the Rev. Earnest Brown officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Granite City, with full military honors.
