SCOTT CITY -- The Scott City Police Department will provide 300 free firearm safety kits to local residents through a partnership with Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearms safety education program.

The safety kits will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. any day at the Scott City Police Department, 618 Main St.

"Each kit contains a safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock," said Lt. Roy Butler. "The locks fit on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. The goal is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm."

Project ChildSafe was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and is funded by a grant from the Department of Justice with additional funding provided by the firearms industry.
