Area student awarded Zonta scholarship

Central High School senior Candace London was recently awarded a $100 scholarship from the Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau. London plans to attend Maryville University in St. Louis to pursue a career as a certified public accountant.

Buehrle elected Phi Alpha Delta president at OSU

Amy Diana Buehrle was recently elected president of Phi Alpha Delta pre-law fraternity at Oklahoma State University for the 2004-2005 year. The program was established in 1980 for the purpose of promoting professional competency and achievement in the legal profession. Buehrle is a 2002 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and is a sophomore at OSU. She is the daughter of Tony and Donna Buehrle of Cape Girardeau.

Willey selected Elks' student of the month

Darren Willey, a senior at Scott City High School, has been selected as the Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge student of the month for May. Willey is the son of Cliff and Stacia Hester and has participated in basketball, FCCLA, FBLA and art club. He is an honor roll student and hopes to pursue a career as a pharmacist after high school.

Scott City student named national award winner

Alana Newell of Scott City has been named a national award winner in leadership/ service and honor roll. Newell is the daughter of Mark and Dorothy Newell of Scott City. She is the granddaughter of Paul and Alveda Nation of Scott City and Robert and Grace Newell of Oak Ridge. Her name will appear in the United States Achievement Academy official yearbook.

Rutherford participates in Truman presentation

Sarah Rutherford of Cape Girardeau recently participated in Truman State University's annual presentation of undergraduate research at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. Rutherford is a senior majoring in visual communication and English. She is a graduate of Central High School and the daughter of David and Pam Rutherford. Her display was one of 24 poster presentations showcased in the Capitol rotunda.

Ruopp named finalist in cheerleader competition

Rachel Ruopp of Cape Girardeau has been selected as a state finalist in the Miss Cheerleader of America selection. Ruopp, daughter of Janice and Jack Ruopp, is a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School. As a state finalist, she will compete for scholarships and awards. The program is offered to high school cheerleaders and includes a short interview process.

Little named outstanding student at Truman State

Sara Little of Cape Girardeau has received the outstanding student in psychology award from Truman State University. She was recognized at the recent 2004 Academic Honor Awards Assembly. Little, a senior psychology major, is the daughter of Jim and Melba Little of Cape Girardeau.

Cape native receives awards, recognitions

Cassie Gross, a junior at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo., recently received several awards and recognitions. She is a Harry S. Truman scholarship nominee, a Columbia College Scholar and a member of Alpha Chi honor society. She has received the Andrew J. Bass Jr. scholarship and the outstanding political science major award, and the Who's Who award. Gross is the daughter of Chris and Debbie Gross of Cape Girardeau.

Holzum accepted to nuclear medicine program

Garrett Holzum, son of Jeffrey and Mary Holzum of Cape Girardeau, has been accepted into the nuclear medicine program at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The program accepts only 10 new students each year. He will begin in the fall.
