Theodor Hoener

Theodor Mann "Ted" Hoener died peacefully in his sleep Sunday, April 25, 2004, at his home in Menomonie, Wis., surrounded by members of his family. He was 80.

Ted was born Feb. 24, 1924, to Percival J. and Frieda W. Mann Hoener in St. Louis, where he spent most of his life. Ted graduated from high school in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Ted had five children with his first wife. In 1951 he earned a bachelor of architecture degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He practiced architecture in St. Louis and then in Cape Girardeau from 1974 to 1992.

In 1971 he served as president of the St. Louis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

He was instrumental in the creation of Cape Girardeau Riverfront Park. His firm designed many area buildings including Cape Girardeau Public Library, Jackson police and fire station, and the Jackson post office. He was especially proud of the renovation projects his firm completed for Southeast Missouri Hospital over a 10-year period because his father had designed the original building.

Ted married Shirley Goluska in 1979, and they moved to Menomonie in 1992. He planned to retire but took one last job as assistant construction manager for the Wal-Mart Distribution Center building project.

Community service was always very important to Ted. He helped on the sanctuary restoration project of the First Congregational Church of Menomonie. He was on the committee to create The Oaks housing facility and volunteered as construction observer for the project. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Red Cross.

Ted loved cars, sailing and the outdoors. He owned an "early" 1964 Ford Mustang. He immensely enjoyed river trips, camping, parks and sailing his small sailboat.

Ted is survived by his wife, Shirley; four children, Glynn C., Todd M., Greta C., and Ted W. Hoener; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alan J. and Fred H. Hoener; and a daughter, Gaye C. Hoener.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at First Congregational Church of Menomonie.

Memorials may be directed to First Congregational Church, 420 Wilson, Menomonie, Wis., 54751, where a fund has been established in Ted's name to provide maintenance for the historic building.
