'Lord of the Dance' a feast for eyes and ears

Even without star Michael Flatley appearing in it (he is now the artistic director), "Lord of the Dance" manages to be an unapologetic crowd pleaser, which was evident on Wednesday at the Show Me Center.

There are definitely some over-the-top moments, including the gothic-Celtic stage, the ever-present fog machines and lighting that was reminiscent of a rock show.

But despite these moments, "Lord of the Dance" is a thoroughly enjoyable and eminently watchable show.

A big part of the show is dancing, which manages to shine through to be the real star. It is easy to be transfixed by watching the dancers perform the graceful yet high-energy mix of traditional Irish dance, ballet and tap.

The music provides a perfect backdrop to the dancing, as both are rooted in Irish tradition. Particularly popular with the audience was a performance by two female fiddlers, who had people clapping along in no time.

As loud as the music, and as rhythmically appealing, was the sound of the dancers' footwork.

Through the difficult choreography all the dancers performed in near-perfect unison. The best performances in the show were when the whole troupe was on stage, blending gracefully together.

At one point early in the performance, the female dancers quickly rip off their traditional Irish dresses to reveal skimpier, showier outfits. In a way, that move symbolizes the narrow line that the show successfully walks between tradition and showbiz glitz.
