Charles Burger

Charles Douglas Burger, 74, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at his home.

He was born July 25, 1933, in St. Louis, son of Phillip S. and Cynthia Courtois Burger. He and Janet McDowell Fast were married May 10, 1969, in Herculaneum, Mo.

Burger served in the Army from Aug. 11, 1950, to Dec. 17, 1953. He received the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar, Marksman Badge with Carbine Bar, Marksman Badge with Submachine Gun Bar, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge.

He was a truck driver with United Van Lines, former manager of Cape Transfer and Storage in Cape Girardeau, co-driver for John F. Kennedy Memorial Library Exhibit that toured the country, Matco Tool Distributor, and currently worked for Coad Chevrolet.

Survivors include his wife of Cape Girardeau; two sons, Lance Burger of Mount Zion, Ill., Scott Fast of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; a half sister, Judy Lee of Festus, Mo.; two half brothers, Orville "Dink" Coaley of Hillsboro, Mo., Phil Burger of Perryville, Mo.; a stepsister-in-law, Janice Wetzel of Eureka, Mo.; a stepbrother, Ed Wetzel of Dellwood, Mo.; honorary grandchildren, Alyssa and Megan Davis.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Cape County Memorial Park, with members of VFW Post 3838 officiating.
