Van Arden Sander and Dorothy A. Gross retired this week from Boatmen's Bank in Cape Girardeau; Sander began work at Boatmen's in the bookkeeping department Aug. 11, 1947; Gross started July 1, 1958, in the note department.

50 years ago: July 2, 1958

A modernization and remodeling program that will cost $275,000 has been started in Cape Girardeau's public school buildings with funds provided by the $700,000 bond issue approved by voters in May; concentration of work at the present is at Washington School.

Air traffic at the municipal airport is expected to increase 10 to 15 percent when a Civil Aeronautics Administration Interstate Airways Communication Station is moved here from Farmington, Mo.

The Rev. J.L. Cox, pastor of the new Nazarene congregation in Cape Girardeau, preaches at the opening series of union services in Courthouse Park in the evening.

The Rev. H. Wiesmann, new associate pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, delivers his first sermon at the church; Wiesmann, who replaces the Rev. L.M. Steinmeyer, is assistant to the Rev. Alphons V. Nicholas.

100 years ago: July 2, 1908

After several trips this week, the motor car which the Houck road is to place in interurban service has been pronounced a success; it is firmly believed it is exactly the type of conveyance needed on a line such as the Cape and Chester Railroad; Frank Whetstine of Jackson will operate the car between Cape Girardeau and Jackson.

P.A. Hoch, Joe Fuerth and Ed Johnston went up to St. Louis this week and selected decorations and fireworks for the Knights of Columbus' big Fourth of July celebration.
