ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Stray Rescue has begun work on a donated warehouse that will become the first animal shelter in downtown St. Louis.

The nonprofit animal rescue group in St. Louis competed nationally and won a $1 million prize in May from Zootoo.com to finance the project.

The future shelter is a 16,000-square-foot warehouse in downtown St. Louis that was donated by A.G. Edwards before it merged with Wachovia last fall.

Stray Rescue plans to have the new shelter up and running before Halloween.

Zootoo.com is a pet lovers' social networking site that was founded last fall by multimillionaire Richard Thompson, the former chief executive of New Jersey-based Meow Mix.
