Forecasters say the hottest weather of the season is starting the week in much of Missouri and Kansas.
Heat advisories are posted Monday for St. Louis and southeast Missouri, including Cape Girardeau. Highs are expected in the upper 90s with heat index readings from 105 to 110 in the afternoon and evening hours in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
In northwest Missouri, Kansas City health officials have issued a heat advisory with heat index readings nearing 100 degrees in early afternoon. Highs in southwest Missouri will be in the lower 90s -- but humidity will be high.
In Kansas, forecasters say the hot spots will be Dodge City and Hays at 101 degrees, while Wichita, Salina and Garden City may reach 100. Elsewhere temperatures will top out between 95 and 100. Heat index readings well over 100 will be common.
