With high humidity and temperatures climbing into the mid-90s, the National Weather Service reported the heat index reached 105 degrees or more today in Southeast Missouri and the surrounding region.

The temperature at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport was 94 degrees at 2:53 p.m., with a heat index already at 106 degrees.

The index was expected to remain over 100 degrees until after 6 p.m.

By Wednesday, temperatures should drop into the upper 80s. Clouds are expected to dominate, with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to weather service forecasts.
