Otahkians open with 3-2 victory

Southeast Missouri State University's soccer team expects to have a big year and Friday night the Otahkians got their season off to a strong start by beating Arkansas 3-2 in front of more than 200 fans at Houck Stadium.

"It's a great way to start the season," Southeast coach Heather Nelson said. "I have a very good feeling about this team."

Arkansas is not exactly a powerhouse, but the Razorbacks are part of the tough Southeastern Conference. Beating them can't help but boost the Otahkians' confidence.

"It's a big win. It's awesome," senior forward Diana Poovey said. "We're so excited for the season."

The Otahkians had trouble scoring last season -- they put in just 25 goals in 20 games while going 10-5-5 -- but Friday they showed that perhaps their offensive problems are a thing of the past.

"It's definitely a good sign," Nelson said. "And we got goals out of three different people."

Southeast jumped on top midway through the first half as Poovey scored from about 12 yards off an assist from senior midfielder Marla Gianino.

Arkansas tied things on a late-first half goal by Allison Harris.

The Otahkians went back ahead 2-1 about 15 minutes into the second half as junior midfielder Megan Hejlek boomed in a free kick from about 32 yards.

Arkansas came back four minutes later when Christina Burger lofted in a rainbow shot from about 40 yards that barely got over Southeast keeper Amanda Wrzos.

But the Otahkians countered less than four minutes later -- with 22:37 left in the game -- on junior forward Lisa Schweppe's goal from about five yards out. Senior midfielder Michelle Frossard and senior forward Erin Slattery earned assists.

"It's a big win," Schweppe said. "It's definitely a good way to start the season."

Southeast hosts Evansville at 2 p.m. Sunday. Following the game, fans are invited to meet the team on the field and obtain autographs.
