FARMINGTON, Mo. -- Two former jailers were indicted this week on charges alleging they exchanged cigarettes for sexual favors from inmates in the St. Francois County Jail.

Sheriff Dan Bullock said Jeremy Wade Ivy of Ironton and Craig Wood of Farmington, both 28, were arrested Tuesday and later released on bond.

Ivy is charged with two counts of having sexual contact with an inmate; Wood is charged with one count of the same offense.

Bullock said he asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol to investigate in January after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced. The patrol got assistance from the Missouri attorney general's office after the local prosecutor recused herself.

A St. Francois County grand jury indicted the men based on evidence presented by the attorney general's office.

Both jailers had resigned before the start of the investigation in January, Bullock said, and neither resignation was related to the investigation.

The felony charges against the two men carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
