Kennett, Mo., puts brakes on driving nonregistered vehicles in city

KENNETT, Mo. — Mayor Roger Wheeler, with support of the elected councilmen for the city, is putting the brakes on driving nonregistered vehicles that do not pass state inspection and bear tags within the city limits.

During a rescheduled council meeting Monday, Wheeler asked police chief Barry Tate to immediately begin offering warnings to anyone who illegally operates a vehicle such as a motorized scooter, golf cart, an all-terrain vehicle or power chair on the streets of Kennett and on a highway, such as Highway 412.

Noting that it was a major safety concern for all, Wheeler pointed out that ordinances and state laws are in place in support of the said enforcement.

The mayor also said that, although other communities in Missouri or surrounding regions do allow the use of these kinds of vehicles on their roads for various reasons including to save money due to high gas prices, doing the same is not an option for Kennett.

The local police department and other government agencies are allowed to use the vehicles for work purposes, as written in the legislation.
