ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Several American Red Cross emergency shelters remain on stand-by for evacuees from Hurricane Gustav, but so far, no one is staying at any of them.

Gustav hit the Gulf Coast as a Category 2 hurricane Monday, leaving parts of New Orleans without power and threatening some levees. It has since been downgraded to a tropical storm.

The Red Cross says shelters have been set up in all corners of the state as well as in mid-Missouri.

Red Cross spokeswoman Jessica Willingham says a handful of volunteers from the St. Louis area have gone to Louisiana to help out. The Humane Society of Missouri also sent volunteers to help rescue animals.
