Indians shut down Reyes for season

CLEVELAND — Indians pitcher Anthony Reyes is done for the year because of a tender right elbow.

"We're going to shut him down for this season because there is no sense in pushing it," Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said Tuesday. "We're going to do everything we can to make sure he's ready to go for spring training."

The righty went 2-1 with a 1.83 ERA in six starts for Cleveland after being acquired July 26 from St. Louis for minor league reliever Luis Perdomo. He was 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA in 10 relief appearances before the trade.

Reyes underwent an MRI exam Tuesday and said he did not know the results.

Wedge said the 26-year-old Reyes had pitched well enough to be considered for a rotation spot in 2009.

"He did a fantastic job in the period he's been with us," Wedge said. "He's done a great job with his fastball, moving it up, down, in and out. His changeup is a plus pitch and he's very stoic. Nothing fazes him. He's very serious and I like that."
