The formation of committees -- long a sore spot with some board members -- dominates the Jackson School Board's meeting, with the board approving four committees to tackle graduation requirements, personnel evaluation, merit pay for certain employees and a sick leave pool for noncertified personnel.

McCLURE, Ill. -- The water system for McClure and East Cape Girardeau will be shut down Oct. 7 to allow workers to scour out the water storage tank and hopefully eliminate a red water problem which has been plaguing the two cities' water supply for several months.

50 years ago: Sept. 27, 1958

Not all the 2,111 students registered at State College this fall brought their own cars to Cape Girardeau, but it seems that way; school administrators are wrestling with king-sized traffic and parking problems on campus.

Rebecca Anne Reeves, 5, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Reeves of Cape Girardeau, drowns in the Diversion Channel near Allenville as her parents make desperate efforts to save her; Mrs. Reeves is nearly drowned as well, and is in serious condition at a hospital.

A fund of $99.40, representing its share for two performances at Fairground Park yesterday by the Barnett Bros. Circus, is turned over to the Central Relief Organization; the organization sponsored the circus and received 15 percent of the gross gate receipts.

Lemuel J. Bone of Millersville has purchased the Hotel Jackson and will take possession of the hostelry Sunday; Mr. and Mrs. William Essman, who have conducted Jackson's only hotel for 10 years, will leave Sunday for Carrollton, Ill.

100 years ago: Sept. 27, 1908

The Rev. Truex of St. Louis has declined to accept the invitation extended him to become pastor of the Baptist church in Cape Girardeau; his action comes as a disappointment to the congregation, who hoped he would take up the work recently laid down by the Rev. J.O. Willett, who went to Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Playing in rain and mud, the visiting Perryville, Mo., baseball team claims the championship game of the season, defeating the Capahas by a score of 5-3.
