Devils start own streak against Scott City

SCOTT CITY -- Chaffee quarterback Aaron Horrell wanted his team to give his father, assistant coach Brian Horrell, the best birthday present of all Friday without having to spend any money.

Aaron Horrell and his teammates delivered the 39-year-old Horrell that present -- a victory over rival Scott City.

The younger Horrell completed 9 of 19 passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns to help Chaffee rout Scott City 28-6 at Scott City High School.

Chaffee also took advantage of seven Rams (2-3) turnovers.

"Today's my dad's 39th birthday, and I think it's probably the best birthday present he could ever receive," Horrell said.

This is the second straight year Chaffee (3-2) has beaten Scott City. Last year, the Red Devils ended Scott City's 21-year winning streak with a two-point win.

Horrell is in his first year as a varsity starting quarterback. He watched from the sidelines last year when the Red Devils ended the streak.

Horrell entered Friday's contest as one of the top local passers, completing 37 of 59 passes for 457 yards through the first four weeks.

Horrell admitted that he did not have his best performance Friday. He threw two interceptions -- one more interception than in his first four weeks combined.

But he said the most important thing is that his team earned the win.

"It's Scott City and I'm a teenager and I'm anxious," Horrell said. "I'm normally a calm guy, but tonight I was a little anxious. I gave them the ball back a couple times. But it was nice to capitalize on their [turnovers] and get the advantage on the scoreboard.

"I'm not a number guy. I'm not concerned about that. ... I just wanted a victory."

Horrell said he woke up this morning at 6 and laid in bed thinking about the game until he needed to get dressed. He spent all day thinking about what his team needed to do to earn a victory.

The nerves started kicking in for the first time since his first varsity start in Week 1.

"Before Grandview, we came out for stretches and warmups and I was pretty nervous because it was my first varsity start," Horrell said. "I'm usually pretty relaxed. But today, this is all I've been thinking about. It's such a big game and it means so much to everybody in the community."

Chaffee running back Collin Dannenmueller said Horrell has stepped up this season and taken the reins as quarterback.

"He's my boy," Dannenmueller said. "We couldn't do it without him."

Scott City coach Ronnie Jones said Chaffee took advantage of his team's seven turnovers.

"I don't know what the deal is with these kids," Jones said. "You get them out there and we go over this same exact stuff every day non-stop. They didn't do one thing tonight that we didn't have them prepared for and showed them. ... It comes to a point where they've got to want it."

Jones said he was outcoached by Vickery.

"To make a long story short -- I guess coach Vickery is a better coach than I am," Jones said. "The big thing is getting them motivated to want to play."

Horrell started slow. His first three passes were incomplete. But on his fourth attempt, he found Josh Roberts across the middle for a 60-yard touchdown. The touchdown capped a six-play 75-yard drive

It gave the Red Devils a 6-0 lead with 8 minutes, 27 seconds left in the first half.

"He had a good summer and throwing the ball in the offseason," Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said of Horrell. "When we can protect him, we can complete some passes and everything and he's accurate. He was off a little bit early, but I think that was just because of the adrenaline flowing. He does a good job and receivers have caught the ball for us real well, too."

The Red Devils faced fourth-and-2 from their own 48-yard line and opted to punt with 6:25 remaining in the second quarter.

The punt hit the leg of a Scott City player and was recovered by Chaffee at the Rams' 38-yard line.

Horrell then fired a pass to Dannenmueller streaking down the right side for a 38-yard touchdown on the first play.

Horrell floated a pass to Trenton Horman to complete the 2-point conversion for the 14-0 lead.

"The big thing is that ... he [Horrell] was afforded a little bit of time, and second of all we've got people that were not covering their receivers," Jones said.

Chaffee increased the lead to 20-0 with 5:09 left in the third when Dannenmueller ran in a reverse on fourth-and-9 from the Scott City 10.

Chaffee scored another touchdown early in the fourth to go ahead 28-0. Scott City's lone touchdown came in the fourth.

"It was a little bit bigger spread [than last year], but it didn't feel any different," Vickery said. "When it was 28-6, I'm still thinking, 'Is the clock ever going to run down?'"
