Portageville woman in critical condition after Saturday shooting

PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. — A woman was in critical condition following an early morning shooting Saturday in Portageville.

Although details weren't available as of press time, New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens reported his officers were called to a residence at Point Pleasant about 5:50 a.m. Saturday. At the scene, officers found a woman with a gunshot wound to the head. She was flown by air ambulance service to a Memphis hospital. Stevens indicated the woman's condition was very critical.

An assailant was arrested at the scene and a gun recovered, the sheriff said.

Investigation was continuing by the sheriff's department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
