Cape Girardeau Mayor Howard C. Tooke, who two weeks ago cast the deciding vote against a liquor-by-the-drink license request, says he now supports a new package liquor license request for the combination service station/convenience store and deli restaurant at a site opposite the First Baptist Church on Broadway.

The Army Corps of Engineers is in the process of modifying its flood-control improvement plans for the Cape La Croix-Walker Creek drainage area in an attempt to scale down the cost of the multimillion-dollar project; the amended project would cost about $26.1 million, with $5.1 million derived locally, compared to the original project cost of $29.4 million, with $6 million to be provided locally.

50 years ago: Nov. 1, 1958

Cape Girardeau and Jackson have been designated by the Post Office Department as two of a series of Missouri and Illinois cities to serve as sectional centers for expediting of mail under a sweeping new program that will assure next-day delivery of first-class letter mail in a 22,371-square-mile area centered in metropolitan St. Louis.

An unusually quiet Halloween was observed in Cape Girardeau last night, probably due to the rainfall which began in mild form in the early afternoon and grew to a downpour near dusk.

75 years ago: Nov. 1, 1933

Approximately 900 feet of pavement on the Bend Road farm-to-market route has been put down, according to contractor E.L. Markham, who started laying the slab yesterday; some delay is being caused by a lack of dump trucks; eight are being used, but the contractor says he could employ eight to 10 more.

Halloween goblins made off with half-dozen manhole covers from Cape Girardeau streets Monday night; the covers weigh about 175 pounds each.

100 years ago: Nov. 1, 1908

The Rev. W.M. Walton, archdeacon of Missouri, preaches at Christ Episcopal Church in the morning.

Frank Tacke, a Republican candidate for sheriff Cape Girardeau County, was forced to leave the city Friday evening for his home at Arnsberg, threatened with pneumonia after spending considerable time among the voters.
