Knights prepare for Tootsie Roll drive

The Knights of Columbus 32nd Annual Mental Retardation Drive will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday. During the statewide drive, Tootsie Rolls are given in exchange for a donation to the cause of helping the mentally retarded in Missouri to help themselves. Knights of Columbus representatives can be identified with yellow aprons at area businesses including Wal-Mart, Kmart, Hobby Lobby and grocery stores.

Fall festival on tap at Saxon memorial

The 24th fall festival at Saxon Lutheran Memorial will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Saxon Lutheran Memorial, 296 Saxony Memorial Drive, Frohna. The past will be revisited with horse and wagon rides, freshly made apple butter and homemade bread prepared in outdoor ovens and sold by the slice. A blacksmith will shoe horses and crafters will don period-style clothing. Activities from long ago will be revisited including making cider, brooms and soap. In addition to a variety of food stands, a hog will be butchered and yarn spun from wool. Children will sing German songs in the afternoon.

Florida-bound truck to help hurricane victims

A truck traveling from Wisconsin to Florida is making a stop in town to help hurricane victims. Donations for hurricane victims will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Friday, Monday and Tuesday at the Naval Reserve Center, 2530 Maria Louise Lane, Cape Girardeau. Clean adult and children's clothes, shoes, blankets, toys, stuffed animals, non-perishable food and non-breakable items will all help. For more information, call 335-3051.

Storytimes planned at regional libraries

The Riverside Regional libraries in Southeast Missouri have planned storytimes for October. "Leaves Fall and Halloween Tricks or Treats" will be held today at 1:15 and 2 p.m. in Oran, Mo.; from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday in Riverside Regional Library at Benton, Mo.; and at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 21 in Scott City. At 10 a.m. Oct. 20 "Fall Holiday" will be held at Perryville, Mo.

Ghouls, goblins parading in Scott City Oct. 23

The Scott City Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor the 17th annual Halloween parade beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 23. Individuals in costumes, floats and school bands will line up at 9 a.m. at the Assembly of God Church parking lot. Costume judging will follow the parade at Fall Fest on Second Street.
