Raymond L. Compas, 86, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at Monticello House in Jackson.

He was born May 20, 1922, in New Hamburg, Mo., son of Leo H. and Clara Diebold Compas. He and Minnie Sandboss were married in September 1949 in Cape Girardeau.

Compas was a member of St. Mary Cathedral and VFW Post 3838. He was employed by West Lake Quarry until he retired in 1993. He was an avid fisherman.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Steve Compas and wife Martha Ann of Jackson; two daughters, Pam Church and husband Boyce of Cape Girardeau, Kathy Beard and husband Buck of Jackson; two brothers, Vernon and Elmer Compas of Cape Girardeau; four sisters, Bernice Glass of Cape Girardeau, Clara Cruickshank of Orlando, Fla., Lucille Waters of Cape Cod, Mass., Rita Yarbrough of Cape Girardeau; seven grandchildren, Darren Compas and wife Carol of Little Rock, Ark., Kristal Compas of Kansas City, Mo., Ben Schlenker, Emily Church and Clay Church, all of Cape Girardeau, Amy Huskey and husband James and Joey Beard of Jackson; and a great-grandchild, Madisyn Huskey of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the Rev. Tom Kiefer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery with full military rites by Missouri Honor Guard.
