Cape Girardeau County AARP

The Cape Girardeau County AARP 4041 met Oct. 4 at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.

The program was "Historical homes in Cape Girardeau County" presented by Dr. Lisa Speer, president of the Historical Society.

New members are Rosie Phegley, Lenore Widner and Brucie Woods.

The AARP Andrus Award for service was presented to Opal Collins.

Friendship Club

The Friendship Club met at the home of Elsie Gerecke on Oct. 12. The program was presented by Pat Miller Williams. She spoke about "Lifeline," which is offered by Saint Francis Medical Center. Lifeline is a personal response and support service offered by the hospital.

Betty Grojean gave the devotion "Enlarge your tent."

Contributions for the food pantry may still be brought to the next meeting on Nov. 9 at the home of Grojean.

Wonderworkers FCE

The Wonderworkers FCE Club met at the home of June Landgraf on Oct. 14. The meal was prepared by the hostess with a Romanian theme. The hostess gave the devotion "You are the only one."

Business consisted of a report by Margie W. Reisenbichler on the FCE district meeting in Greenville, Mo., that she attended.

Dorothy Lichtenegger, Nelda Starzinger and Landgraf will attend the FCE Leaders' Training Meeting at Farrar, Mo., on Nov. 5.

Landgraf gave the program on the country of Romania.

The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the home of Nell Kieninger.

VFW 3838 Auxiliary

The VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 3838 met Oct. 11 at the post with Judy Thrower, president, presiding. Guest speakers were Bud Hager, post commander, Bill Humphries and Jim Carver. They spoke on the new building and Buddy Poppy days.

District president Susan Hill made a visit to the meeting. Communications were read by Jane Jenkins, secretary.

Committee reports were made. Hospital chairman Jewell Lincecum announced bingo at the Missouri Veterans home is the fourth Saturday of each month and volunteers are always needed. National home chairman Carolyn Moore asked that the ladies continue to save Campbell Soup labels. Youth activities chairman Judy Biester announced that there will be a Halloween party for children at the post on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Steak nite chairman Phyllis Dodds announced the next Steak Nite will be Nov. 6. Help is needed and she also asked that the ladies bring desserts. Steak Nite is open to the public, serving from 5 to 8 p.m.

Thrower reminded the ladies to vote Tuesday. Buddy Poppy Days will be Nov. 12 and 13. Contact Dorothy Points for more information.

The president also announced the district meeting will be Nov. 7 at Post 3174 in Sikeston, Mo., with the meeting following the noon meal.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the post.

Alpha Mu Master

Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Bernie Gardner. Prior to the meeting the chapter attended the annual All-Chapter Preferential Tea. The meeting was conducted by Linda Metheny, president.

An invitation was received for a Phantom Tea to benefit Hunter Ross of Jackson who has a chromosone disorder. A chapter contribution will be sent.

An invitation was also received for the Exemplar Preceptor Night to be held at the Elks Lodge on Nov. 18. Reservations will be taken at the next meeting.

The group discussed attending the SEMO Dance Review and the Radio City Rockettes Show at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis for November and December club activities.

Carole Calvin, Bobbie Woodard, Bernie Gardner, Judie Herbst and Metheny attended the Beta Sigma Phi Missouri State Convention in St. Louis Friday through Sunday.

A basket was given to Joyce Hays to present to her son who was recently married. A silver piggy bank was given to Vicki McKinney to be presented to her newest grandchild.

Following the meeting, the Preceptor Laureate Degree was conferred on Hays and the Masters Degree was conferrred on McKinney.

The next meeting will be at the home of Calvin.

Zonta Club

The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau Area met Oct. 5 at the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

In honor of United Nations Month in October, the featured speaker was Cheryl Mothes regarding her recent visit to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. She read the preamble to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights written in 1948 and described the many worthwhile projects funded and carried out by the United Nations. Some of those included but are not limited to, vaccinations, making an impact on the Ethiopian genocide crisis that took 7,000 lives, serving land mine victims, and overall diplomatic services during various types of conflicts. She encouraged the group to buy Christmas cards through UNICEF, an agency which is part of the United Nations.

A discussion was held regarding the success of the Women of Achievement Luncheon recently held at the Osage Centre as well as upcoming service projects.
