ResortAir, a St. Louis-based regional airline, could begin flights at Cape Girardeau next week if a lease agreement with the city for terminal space at the municipal airport can be concluded by Friday; ResortAir plans to provide nonstop flights between Cape Girardeau and St. Louis.

Following a hearing, Southeast Missouri State University Dean of Students Thomas Lovett has suspended Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity; the fraternity admitted to violations of university policy regarding hazing and possession and consumption of alcohol on campus.

50 years ago: Jan. 17, 1959

NEW MADRID, Mo. — The first steps are being taken to rebuild the mill portion of the Ralph Anderson Lumber Co. in New Madrid, which was destroyed by fire Thursday; the ground is now being cleared; loss was estimated at between $125,000 and $150,000.

With the Cape Girardeau County Court having given permission to use four rooms of the County Farm structure for a school for retarded children, the Cape Girardeau County Association for Retarded Children is making plans for raising the funds necessary to repair and remodel the structure.

75 years ago: Jan. 17, 1934

A reduction of about $37,000 in its expense from 1933 to 1934 is proposed by the Cape Girardeau County Court; a tentative budget of $90,000 has been proposed for the county.

Hillard Brewster, landscape architect for the State Highway Department, comes to Cape Girardeau to assist Engineer D.M. Scivally of the Special Road District in setting out 800 elm trees along U.S. 61 and Highway 74 in this vicinity; he brings with him a crew of three men and will be aided by road district employees.

100 years ago: Jan. 17, 1909

The Rev. M.T. Haw of Jackson preaches at both the morning and evening worship services at Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau; throughout the week, he will assist the Rev. W.H. Whitnell, pastor, in a revival meeting at the church.

The Rev. A.M. Ross, the new pastor of the Baptist church in Cape Girardeau, is winning the affections of the people; in the evening he preaches a memorable sermon, his text being "Pitching Your Tent Toward Sodom."
